#atozchallenge – C is for Cihuateotl, both honoured and feared

Any mother will tell you that childbirth is a battle!

Without ultrasound, sterile beds, and patient staff, it’s not hard to imagine childbirth as an even greater battle for fearless Aztec women. Were their lives claimed in the act of giving birth, their souls were granted a great honour – that of accompanying the sun on its daily journey. At night, however, these lost Cihuateotl haunted the crossroads, seeking children to replace the ones they could not birth and cursing the hapless with seizures and insanity.

Always be wary when traversing the roads at night – take care not to cross paths with the Cihuateotl!
