Inkshares Preview #4 – Mechcraft by Brian Fitzpatrick

I haven’t yet posted about Brian Fitzpatrick‘s work Mechcraft, but I’ve been anticipating its release for a while.

Mechcraft

The Matrix meets Harry Potter – the tagline alone is almost enough to justify the purchase! What this book promises is nano technology “liquid metal” that be summoned with mental commands. The teenage protagonist Jake discovers that he can control this tech – when Jake uses the power, the nanobots emerge from the pores of his skin to take any shape, weapon or machine desired. He must learn to master this power as he fights against the factions who want to destroy him.

Mechcraft is still in production, but Fitzpatrick promises that not only will further books come, but that there will be film and other adaptations will follow as well. Check out Mechcraft on its Inkshares page and pre-order, or buy it from your favorite bookstore after release!

Inkshares Preview #3 – Rise & Fall by Brian Guthrie

It’s been a long time since I’ve written about Brian Guthrie’s work. I saw his work on Jukepop.com, and was glad to see it again when I discovered Inkshares.

Rise was the first ever book I received from Inkshares! As I said way back, the story builds an intriguing world, described through detailed narrative and brought to life through the eyes of scribe Logwyn. This first book starts as a fantastic world of scattered landmasses (called shells) is threatened as the technology sustaining this world is starting to fail.

There is also the second book in the planned four-part series, Fall, which I’m eagerly anticipating. The sequel will follow a war that takes place between the shells as humanity clings to survival.

Anyone who appreciates deep lore and worldbuilding should give Rise a shot, and be sure to check out Fall when it is released!

Inkshares preview #2 – Human Resources by Robert Batten

When I last previewed Human Resources by Robert Batten, it was still in funding.

How things have changed!

Human resources is now a pending novel, slated for release early next year. It won the Launch Pad Competition in 2016 and several other awards – check out Batten’s blog to see all the distinctions.

The premise seems nice at first – in the future, direct editing of the human genome is possible. Unfortunately, there’s a little side-effect – it leads to the Blight, which turns the infected into bloodthirsty monsters. Humanity nearly becomes extinct, but some are allowed to survive – as long as they remain viable food.

Check out the Inkshares page here, and be sure to pre-order a copy from there or grab one from your favorite bookstore when it’s released.

Inkshares Preview #1 – The Punch Escrow by Tal M. Klein

41scudtkvzl

What can I say about Tal M. Klein‘s novel that hasn’t already been said?

There’s an awful lot of buzz about The Punch Escrow these days, what with a film adaptation forthcoming. Well, let’s shoot down one tagline that’s going around – this isn’t “The next Ready Player One” or whatever that quote was. There are 80’s references, aye, but it isn’t a jam-packed mess of 80’s nostalgia with a bit of a plot underneath.

No, what you get with The Punch Escrow is a funny and thoughtful exploration of one little tiny problem with teleportation. Geeks know the question – is the Captain Kirk that appears with a team of expendable redshirts on the planet surface the same one who stepped on the transporter pad? Does Kirk die every time Scotty beams him up? The Punch Escrow answers that question With Science! through the misadventures of a sarcastic hero, Joel Byram.

With a quick and fun narrative, it’s easy to get into the book and see why there’s been so much buzz. And when I say With Science! I mean it – the narrative is clearly well-researched. There’s a lot of attention to detail, but the narrative still manages to move quickly.

The Inkshares page where it all started is here, and of course you can grab it at Amazon and everywhere else!

Building the End of the Story – my results

You can see more of these exercises here.

For some very good reasons, these posts will be shorter and not on schedule!

In the last post, I urged you to write an ending that diverges from the obvious…

a_fork_in_the_path_-_geograph-org-uk_-_821812

The straight, expected path represents your story without any twists, nothing unexpected. The right ending, however, takes the reader off that path to a better, more meaningful ending. It doesn’t have to be a happy ending, but it does have to require the reader to pay attention every step of the way.
