In Flight of Angels by Kate Merenda Hohl, a street smart secretary from New York arrives in Los Angeles to clear her boss’s name when he’s framed for murder.
Franny Bari is a New Yorker living in Los Angeles in 1957 – she’s a fast-talking secretary for a private investigator. When her boss is framed for the murder of a young woman found in the La Brea tar pits, Franny must navigate a seedy underbelly of ex-cons and crooked cops as she works to clear her boss’s name.
I love the idea that the noir P.I. of the story is the one under investigation in the story, and that it’s up to his secretary, a character who would normally be sidelined, to actually solve the case. The narrative promises the familiarity of hard-boiled noir fiction, but with a female voice that was almost unheard in the classics of the genre.
