#Inkshares Preview #49 – Space Cat by Sammy Wilsmore (@MindInTheStars)
In Space Cat by Sammy Wilsmore, a researcher on a space station in orbit receives an unexpected new friend.
Commander Leah Esstrerson is a researcher aboard a microgravity farm base with a mission to grow food for self-sustainability beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Without consulting Leah, colleagues of hers on Earth have sent her a new companion – a cat, complete with a custom-designed space suit. With her expected isolation interrupted by an unusual and unexpected companion, Leah must complete her original research while learning to live with a cat – in space!
While the premise is at first humorous, the narrative promises human drama and exploration of space travel themes as well as some comedic moments. The preview chapters hint at some of the mental trials that Leah and astronauts like her face on long missions alone, and the addition of a pet cat seems like it will be a way to broaden the emotional experience of living in space. I look forward to hearing more about this story!

#Inkshares Preview #47 – The Bones of the Past by Craig A. Munro (@BonesofthePast)
The Bones of the Past by Craig A. Munro follows multiple characters as demons and deities are unleashed upon a dark fantasy landscape.
The Bones of The Past follows several intriguing characters as darkness rises in the epic fantasy setting. One thread follows Salt, a sailor rescued by the Night Guard of the city of Bialta. He’s a quick learner, but he’ll have to train hard to help the Night Guard against the strange and demonic challenges they face. One such threat is Nial, a girl changed by a demonic force and who now hunts for human souls. Another plot thread follows Maura, a citizen of Sacral – a city that has been hidden and has just reappeared to the outside world. Maura will have to leave behind her isolated life as war approaches her once-hidden city. There is also Carver, a master of magic known as fleshcarving, who is bent on unleashing an army of twisted creations upon the land.
While obviously a very complicated story, the narrative of The Bones of the Past manages to be easy enough to follow, drawing the reader in to each of the main characters. I enjoyed the available chapters very much, and I’ve put this at the top of my list of books to by after my current crowdfunding campaign. I’m also very excited about the upcoming sequel!

#Inkshares Preview #46 – Kingdom of Dreams by Kevin O’Coffey (@KevinOCoffey)
Last time I talked about Kingdom of Dreams by Kevin O’Coffey, it was still in funding – and now it’s in full development with a release date soon to be announced!
The story is about Jimmy Reve, a boy who just wants his bullies to go away. One day, the bullies start to disappear, one by one, and Jimmy realizes his problems are much worse than he thought. He is introduced to the Kingdom of Dreams, and has to find a way to fix the damage he has caused – or he will disappear next.
That’s the synopsis I wrote back then – the story is now undergoing developmental edits with Inkshares, but the idea seems to be the same. Kingdom of Dreams is a darkly humorous hybrid of graphic novel and traditional novel, with artwork painstakingly provided by the author. The preview discussion also offers another interesting tidbit – the finished book will have different artwork at the very start of the book to represent different ethnicities for the main character. It looks like the reader will get to choose what the main character looks like – I can’t wait to see this incredible idea in action!

#Inkshares Preview #45 – Tainted by P.J. Marshman (@PJMarshman)
After being attacked while in the forest, a man fights the beast within for control over his mind and body in Tainted by P.J. Marshman
Alex has had nightmares for as long as he can remember – dark images of death that plague his sleep but vanish when he wakes. When he’s with his friends on vacation, he’s viciously attacked in a remote mountain forest. The attack awakens something inside him, a hungry creature from his horrid nightmares. Alex must suppress this beast within, or his friends may be the only thing that satisfy his new hunger.
The author has worked on the manuscript for several years, and is even devoloping a screenplay based on it. The narrative is nice and creepy, moving quickly as it promises scares to come. Go check out Tainted on Inkshares now!

Preview #44 – Daughter of the Mara by Alexandra Bittner (@theladyisanerd)
Nightmares intertwine with reality for the heroine of Daughter of the Mara by Alexandra Bittner.
Jayashree Atkinson is constantly surrounded by dreams even while awake, and is locked away for five years for a crime she doesn’t remember. Now she is finally free from the psychiatric hospital where she feared she would spend her entire life. Thanks to a mysterious stranger who broke into her hospital, she knows that she is a mara – the living embodiment of a nightmare.
She begins to learn what it means to be a mara, as she controls her dreams and faces enemies in the waking world. She will have to confront the mother who abandoned her as well as other mara as she tries to learn who and what she is.
Reviewers praise the dark descriptions of the nightmares that surround Jayashree, as well as the complex narrative that follows her journey of self-discovery amidst her struggles against unknown evils. The preview chapters are deeply intriquing as Jayashree deals with both dark visions and skepticism from the doctors around her. Be sure to check out Daughter of the Mara on Amazon and learn more about her dark journey.

#Inkshares Preview #43 – The Wolf in the Woods by Benjamin Gray (@ImBenvincible)
The Wolf in the Woods is an anthology of terror by Benjamin Gray that is in the running for the horror contest.
This book promises to be a creepy anthology of flash fiction and short stories with creepy themes. Wishes with terrible prices, journeys that never end, a computer game that acts against its creator’s wishes – the stories vary in genre, but each promises to have a dark twist.
Anthologies can be a tough sell, but when they promise unusual premises and creeping terror, it’s hard not to be drawn in. The three preview stories available already show a good, crisp narrative with good characters and storytelling. Be sure to check it out on Inkshares!

#Inkshares Preview #42 – The Sulphur Cure by Barry Brennessel
In The Sulphur Cure by Barry Brennessel, an artist who lost everything in the Great Depression searches for the brother he thought was lost in the Great War.
This book is a bit different from the other Inkshares books I’m previewing – The Sulphur Cure was written and published before going on Inkshares for the Launch Pad competition, but this contest should get a bigger audience for the author.
The story follows Vincent Rhodes, an artist who lost his family fortune in the Great Depression, as he receives letters from his brother Theo. Theo went missing in the Great War, so Vincent leaves Brooklyn, following clues in the letters to solve the mystery and find his brother. His search takes him to New England, but the eclectic residents of a decaying resort known as The Sulphur Cure have dark secrets of their own.
Rhodes is an intriguing character from the start, and I really appreciate the simple, compelling narrative of the chapters I’ve read so far. Be sure to check it out on Inkshares and Amazon!

#Inkshares Preview #41 – The Valentine Saga: Innocence by Brendon Udy (@BrendonUdy )
In The Valentine Saga: Innocence by Brendon Udy, a young woman emerges from a fallout bunker after spending 24 years with only a humanoid robot for company.
Nina Valentine lives in a fallout shelter with only one friend, her robot Bob. After 24 years, Nina is ready to break out to the surface, but when she does, she finds the remains of a global war with aliens. As she and Bob search for answers, they discover that the war never truly ended.
Nina is a likable character from the start – smart, brave, and witty. The narrative moves quickly, and promises an enjoyable adventure to come. Check it out on Inkshares now!

Supporter Preview #34 – S.A. Viau, Busan Writing Group
S.A. Viau is a writer who lived in Busan and is one of the main reasons the Busan Writing Group Anthologies are available today.
For the 2017 anthology by the Busan Writing Group, S.A. Viau designed the cover and contributed short fiction, just as he has in the previous books. The 2017 piece Sirens is a poignant story of suicide and the emptiness it carves out of the people left behind. The piece highlights Viau’s economy of words, as the story packs a lot of raw emotion into under two pages of text.
S.A. Viau now lives in Louisiana, where he has just been accepted into an MFA program with LSU. You can read Sirens and more works by the Busan Writing Group on Amazon here!
